Industrial Placement at Reuters


Reuters seeks an energetic and highly motivated Language Technologist for a one-year placement within Reuters Chief Technology Office. The post would particularly suit an experienced academic looking for a sabbatical placement or a recent PhD graduate seeking to gain industrial experience.

The position would suit candidates with a NLP background who are interested in diversifying, or alternatively, candidates who have an IR background but who have interest and knowledge of NLP techniques. We seek candidates with good fundamental knowledge who wish to broaden their interests and see their expertise applied in a practical business context. Candidates with a PhD are preferred, although those with relevant experience are also invited to apply. Application areas of interest include:

Text classification and coding
Document summarisation
Document processing using XML
Information retrieval, including cross-language information retrieval
Information extraction
Machine translation
Navigation of unstructured data
Question answering systems
Speech recognition & synthesis

Responsibilities include the investigation and evaluation of new technologies and software applications, identifying those, which can have a major impact on the business, and assisting in the transfer of these technologies into the bu
siness units. You must be a good team-worker, a good communicator, self-motivated and eager to learn. Good programming experience and a willingness to tackle a wide range of problems are essential. The successful candidate will join a close knit group of highly qualified and motivated individuals who are based in London. It is hoped that the placement will start in October 2001 or asap thereafter. Candidates are therefore encouraged to submit applications at their earliest convenience.
