Fr: Ian Soboroff Re: ACM SIGIR 99 Workshop: Recommender Systems Call for Papers ACM SIGIR 99 Workshop on Recommender Systems: Algorithms and Evaluation Organizers: Ian Soboroff, University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Charles Nicholas, University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Michael J. Pazzani, University of California, Irvine. Background and Theme The world of recommender systems has undergone quite an expansion since the Communications of the ACM published their feature issue on the topic two years ago. Projects such as GroupLens have gone on to be successful commercial ventures, and recommendation systems are de rigeur for Internet commerce. The basic technology has very quickly gone from the research world to popular applications. However, many problems remain to be solved. Several methods for recommender systems have emerged, including approaches that base recommendations on correlations of groups of users and methods that learn about individual users. However, the architectural issues of cold-start, sparse ratings, and scalability continue to dominate the field. The state of the art in recommender systems will be enhanced by the development of evaluation methodologies for recommender systems. User studies are difficult to conduct and generalize from, and issues of presentation and relevance make traditional IR evaluation measures not entirely suited to the domain. Furthermore, test collections such as DEC SRC's EachMovie data set are becoming standard tools, but the need for larger collections in different domains is great. Thus, the theme of the workshop is moving to the next phase of recommender systems research, from the basic "how do we do it" to "how can we do it better", and "how do we know that it's better". Goal The objective of the workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners involved in developing, testing, and fielding recommender systems. The workshop will provide a forum for discussing current practice and recent research results, and develop a roadmap for future recommender systems research. Participants and Selection Process Workshop participants are invited to submit position papers that describe recent or ongoing work in this area. Accepted papers will be published in the workshop proceedings to be distributed at the workshop and preserved on the Web. The organizing committee will select papers to be presented at the workshop on the basis technical merit, interest, or significant innovation. Those interested in presenting a paper, please send a paper, up to 12 pages by May 30 to the address below. Please follow the author instructions for SIGIR 99 papers (except for the length limitation), found at http://www.sims.berkeley.edu/conferences/sigir99/author-info.html. This workshop will include theoretical, practical and descriptive information on many of the high profile identifiers that are now in use or under development, such as the Digital Object Identifier System (DOI) and CNRI's Handle System on which it is based, the International Standard Work Number (ISWN), and the Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) concept. Applications, representative problems and complications surrounding their development and implementation, and examples of their use and management, will all be presented. This workshop is aimed at all levels of library staff that will be affected, from public services and bibliographers, to technical services. Scheduled speakers include: William Arms, Vice President, Corporation for National Research Initiatives (CNRI) Helen Barsky Atkins, Director of Database Development, Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) Leslie L. Fr: Joan K Lippincott Re: Working Together for Archivists, Records, IT CNI announces Working Together: A Workshop for Archivists, Records Managers and Information Technologists, which will be held on Monday and Tuesday, June 21-22, 1999 at the Radisson Barcelo Hotel, 2121 P St., NW in Washington, DC. In an intensive, participatory workshop, archivists, records managers, and information technologists will look at the issues of digital preservation and access, and discuss the management of electronic records in their own institutional context. Sessions will include presentations and small group work. The emphasis of this workshop is on teamwork -- bringing together teams of archivists, records managers, and information technologists who will begin to develop practical plans for electronic records management that can be implemented at their own institutions. Librarians with archive or records management responsibilities are also eligible and encouraged to participate as part of an institutional team. Individuals from higher education institutions, national, state and local archives and agencies, the corporate sector, and non-profit institutions are eligible to attend. The registration fee for the workshop is $225.00 per individual. This fee includes breakfast, lunch, and breaks on both days. The National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) and CNI are subsidizing some of the costs of offering this workshop. The room rate at the Radisson Barcelo Hotel is $125.00 per night. Gerry Bernbom, Indiana University and Fynnette Eaton, Smithsonian Institution Archives, will facilitate the workshop. PARTICIPANTS MUST REGISTER AS INSTITUTIONAL TEAMS - one or more archivists or records managers and one or more information technologists per institution. Each team member must register separately via our website at www.cni.org. REGISTRATION IS LIMITED and will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Fr: Clifford Lynch Re: Streaming Video Technology There is an excellent new paper on streaming video and video on demand technology up on the site vide.utk.edu. For those who haven't seen it, there's also a very helpful cookbook on video conferencing that was released a few months ago. The press release below provides more background on the paper and the video initiative. Clifford ANNOUNCEMENT: VIDE WHITE PAPER ON VIDEO-ON-DEMAND The Video Development Initiative (ViDe) was established in March 1998 to promote and develop functional, standards-based and scalable video systems for use in the higher education environment. ViDe is composed of representatives from The Georgia Institute of Technology, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and North Carolina State University. NYSERNet (New York State, Educational and Research Network) also partnered with ViDe in Phase 1 (August 1, 1998 - April 1, 1999). Phase 1 of this multi-year initiative was funded by the Southeastern Universities Research Association (SURA) to focus ViDe efforts on the promotion of digital video among the 44 SURA member institutions. Two deliverables were prepared in Phase I: A Video Conferencing Cookbook and a White Paper on Video-on-Demand. The white paper, "Digital Video for the Next Millenium," is now accessible at http://sunsite.utk.edu/video (a pdf version is also available at this URL), and presents an overview of current video-on-demand methodologies, standards, vendor offerings, and future developments. Responses to the RFI released by ViDe to the video system vendor community in September 1998 are included. The online edition of "Digital Video for the Next Millenium" also links to examples of streaming video applications at various institutions nationally. For more information, contact Grace Agnew of GIT, author of the white paper and ViDe video-on-demand technical lead (grace.agnew@library.gatech.edu). The Video Conferencing Cookbook (Version 1.0) was released to both the SURA and NYSERNet memberships on February 15, and includes practical steps for getting started with desktop video conferencing, a summary of current vendor offerings, and more advanced functionalities and management. The cookbook is accessible online at http://sunsite.utk.edu/video_cookbook/. For more information, contact Mary Trauner of GIT, cookbook editor and ViDe video conferencing technical lead (Mary.Trauner@oit.gatech.edu). The next phases of the ViDe initiative will consist of the pursuit of collaborations and partnerships with vendors, the implementation, testing and evaluation of systems, and the development of applications deploying the selected technologies. Pursuing interoperability will continue to be a central focus. In addition, ViDe is currently expanding its membership to include institutions nationwide sharing our goals and technical directions, and who can bring additional resources and expertise to the effort. ViDe is a member of the I2 Digital Video effort and represented on the I2 Digital Video steering committee.
