Fr: Joseph Spadaro Re: NY State Electronic Doorway Library Network Libraries Provide Road Map for 'Net Navigators Libraries aren't just the on-ramps to the information superhighway. Now they're making the road a lot easier to travel. An innovative joint library project unveiled today will give World Wide Web users a single point of access to all library web sites, online catalogs, databases and other online resources across New York State. The New York State Electronic Doorway Library Network (www.nyedl.net), established by New York's nine Reference and Research Resources Councils, is a virtual network of all online resources of public, school, hospital, academic and special libraries statewide. Libraries provide access to online resources because more and more of the information that people need to live and learn and work is available electronically. Now, through the links provided by just one site--the EDL Network--users in libraries, homes and offices can look up information on Alzheimer's disease in a consumer-health database provided by New York City libraries, reach microfilm images of historic newspapers at the State Library in Albany, or discover information on the Pan-American African Village through the Buffalo Museum of Science's research library. The World Wide Web home page of each of the nine Reference and Research Resources (3Rs) Councils contains a gateway to the new EDL Network web site: a state map divided by color into nine regions. Every region is linked to its respective Council's web page of local online library resources. Users can navigate between the web pages of all the regions and the EDL Network map to reach local resources throughout the state. The EDL Network is also accessible through the New York State Library's web site at http://unix2.nysed.gov. The 3Rs Councils, which are regional multi-type library organizations, established the network cost-effectively by using their existing technology and network infrastructures. The project was funded, in part, by New York State Electronic Doorway Library Services Aid of 1996. YOUR GUIDE ALONG THE PATH OF MANAGEMENT THINKING: Management ideas and techniques do not create themselves. They are usually the results of lengthy development processes - often in more than one country. Critically evaluating the backgrounds, ideas and influences of the major contributors, JOURNAL OF MANAGEMENT HISTORY uses history as a guide to the future - looking backward at the same time as forward. Subscribers will be able to judge for themselves what contribution the major management theorists have made, how their ideas have been built on or rejected by subsequent thinkers, and the implications for managers of the future. WHO SHOULD READ THE JOURNAL OF MANAGEMENT HISTORY? Many of our subscribers are information professionals who act as information brokers to business, academic and research institutions. As an additional service for information professionals, each issue of the JOURNAL OF MANAGEMENT HISTORY carries abstracts and keywords to facilitate indexing and retrieval. ONLINE DELIVERY: The JOURNAL OF MANAGEMENT HISTORY embraces new technologies by being published on-line via the internet. This medium will allow you to maximize the journals's use and therefore value for money as follows: Multiplicity of Access... Internet access comes complete with a site licence which allows anyone whose email address includes your organization's domain name to access the journal at any time from their own workstation. Access to the wider Community... Each electronic issue will have a space in which you can post your thoughts and ideas. Your comments will be held within the journal contents to provide a wide variety of viewpoints designed to move the debate along far more quickly than by traditional methods. A live debate will ensue which will make a real contribution to the body of knowledge. Regular Home Page Updates... In today's fast-moving world of business and academic information, we have found that a subject such as Empowerment necessitates a method of informing readers of new developments within the field on a continuous basis. AS such, the 1997 Internet subscription of the journal will include an automatic email link that will inform you and your colleagues when a journal page has been updated. Your Searchable On-line Archive... Your 1997 subscription will include access to the earlier volumes of the journal. Like the current volume, this will be networked to the desks of colleagues within your organization. Articles will be available in a searchable format, and subscribers can browse the journal using search terms that range from author and subject to article style. Fr: Wolfgang Prinz Re: International Conference on Supporting Group Work GROUP `97 International Conference on Supporting Group Work "The Integration Challenge" November 16-19, 1997 Phoenix, Arizona USA "http://www.acm.org/sigois/group97.html" GROUP `97 is interested in topics related to computer-based systems which have an impact on groups, organizations and social networks. A strong emphasis of GROUP `97 is the integration of multiple computer-based tools and technologies. Relevant issues include design, implementation, deployment, evaluation, methodologies, and effect of these systems. In the last few years, the functionality and applicability of systems for supporting group work has expanded, leading to their growing application to organizational information, communication, and cooperation processes. This provides opportunities to study their technical and social impacts. Often the integration of new technology with existing or new organizational practices is very challenging. The knowledge gained from such experiences is a valuable resource for all those who plan to, or have integrated computer-based tools for the support of group interaction. At the same time we observe a growing influence of the Internet, mobile computing, agent systems, ubiquitous computing, and virtual reality. We can expect that these new technologies will also exert a large influence on group/organizational structures and processes. These new technologies are exciting in their own right, but their technological and organizational integration to support groups raises many interesting questions and is a challenging new research agenda. GROUP '97 addresses the integration challenge in two tracks: a Social Aspects Track to address organizational and behavioral issues and a Technical Track to address modeling and implementation issues. It brings together researchers and practitioners from different areas working on the development, introduction, management, deployment, and analysis of computer-based systems supporting group work within organizations. We particularly encourage submissions and participation from industry. SOCIAL ASPECTS TRACK: * Experiences with the application of computing systems for the support of group or organizational processes * Strategies experiences with business process re-engineering in combination with the application of computing systems * Social impact of re-engineering and the introduction of computing systems * Workflow systems, models, theory, and applications * Understanding and modeling groups or organizations and their processes * Organizational computing and the Internet * Strategies and solutions for the combination/integration of the emerging Internet business * Socio-technical systems analysis * Ramifications of the mobile office * Social aspects of globally distributed computing and group work * The effects of new technologies on group work * Measurement-based approaches to organizational analysis * Issues of qualitative analysis of large-scale cooperative work TECHNICAL TRACK: * Organizational computing systems and infrastructure * New groupware solutions and technologies * Computer supported collaboration and negotiation * Coordination and workflow technology *Cooperative knowledge management and organizational or group memory * Application of the Internet/Intranet for the support of organizational and group procedures * WWW as a means for the collection, management, and distribution of knowledge in Intranets * New technologies for the support of groups, e.g., agent technology, ubiquitous computing, virtual reality * Object and database models or systems for the support of groups * Multimedia information storage, retrieval, and communications * Human-computer interaction aspects of groups * Social networks and virtual communities Each track of the conference has a program chair and program committee. Submissions to the conference can be in the form of papers, demonstrations, panels, workshops, or tutorials. Accepted papers will be published in the ACM Press conference proceedings. GROUP '97 is sponsored by the Association for Computing Machinery and the Special Interest Group on Office Information Systems (SIGOIS). For membership information call +1 212-626-0500, email to acmhelp@acm.org or see SIGOIS. This conference builds on the tradition of COOCS, while recognizing change of mission and name of SIGOIS to SIGGROUP. PROJECTS IV.C.1. Fr: Maria Zemankova Re: US women researchers: NSF POWRE CFP, proposals due 7/1/97 The Professional Opportunitites for Women in Research and Education (POWRE) program announcement (NSF 97-91) can be found at http://www.nsf.gov/bio/pubs/nsf9791/nsf9791.htm or requested from or (703)306-1130. NOTE - PROPOSAL DEADLINE IS JULY 1 INTRODUCTION: The National Science Foundation's mandate to ensure the vitality of the nation's scientific and engineering enterprise requires a focus on the quality, distribution, and effectiveness of the human resource base in science and engineering, including full utilization of all potentially interested and qualified citizens. Because women are underrepresented in the science and engineering workforce, the Foundation supports efforts aimed at increasing the number of women as full participants in the science and engineering mainstream of the nation's workplace. Of special interest in this announcement is their representation in education and research leadership. The Professional Opportunities for Women in Research and Education (POWRE) program contributes to this goal by supporting activities designed to promote the development of scholarly and institutional leaders in research and education. POWRE is a Foundation-wide program with activities designed to increase women's prominence in science and engineering and to enhance their professional advancement by providing women with funding opportunities not ordinarily available through regular research and education grants. The former Visiting Professorships for Women, Faculty Awards for Women, Research Planning Grants for Women, and Career Advancement Awards for Women programs have been integrated and incorporated into the POWRE program. The Foundation is particularly interested in increasing the participation of minority women, women with disabilities, and women whose careers have been interrupted. Proposals from members of these groups are especially encouraged. OBJECTIVES AND TARGET AUDIENCE: The NSF POWRE program addresses the need to develop full use of the nation's human resources for science and engineering. The objectives of the program are: * To provide opportunities for further career advancement, professional growth, and increased prominence of women in engineering and in the disciplines of science supported by NSF; and * To encourage more women to pursue careers in science and engineering by providing greater visibility for women scientists and engineers in academic institutions and in industry. The POWRE program is targeted at women scientists and engineers who currently (1) hold non-tenured academic positions or industrial positions, (2) hold academic tenured or tenure-track positions, or (3) plan to enter or re-enter academia. ********************************************************** IRLIST Digest is distributed from the University of California, Division of Library Automation, 300 Lakeside Drive, Oakland, CA. 94612-3550.
