Fr: Elaine G. Toms Re: Dalhousie U.: Chair, Marketing Informatics Call for Expression of Interest Chair in Marketing Informatics Faculty of Management Dalhousie University Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada The School of Library and Information Studies in collaboration with the School of Business Administration, two units of the Faculty of Management, Dalhousie University are establishing a Chair in Marketing Informatics with an anticipated beginning date of September 1996. Funding for this exciting new development is being provided by a private sector donor and confirmation of additional partners is expected by June of this year. We are now seeking expressions of interest by potential candidates for the chair holder positions. Two, five-year appointments will be made: one in the School of Library and Information Studies, and the other in the School of Business. In addition, one, half-time junior chair holder will complement the interdisciplinary research team. Marketing informatics describes the technological and analytical foundations for the "new" information-intensive economy. The term, recently coined by John McCann, integrates traditional marketing information systems with new technologies and processes for discovering and presenting deeper relationships and insights. Marketing informatics includes a broad range of tools, some commercially available and others in early states of development, including: information systems, knowledge systems, document management, GIS, hypertext, multimedia, visualization, and computational science. Marketing informatics attempts to clearly recognize and understand client needs and behaviours, particularly as they influence decisions and choices among competing products and services. A key theme in making this possible is information usability, both for information used by marketing managers and for information and services delivered to clients. The overall objectives of the Chair are: a. To stimulate and carry out interdisciplinary research on management principles and best practices in the development, strategic adoption, and application of marketing informatics technologies. b. To act as a catalyst and resource for organizations and researchers considering or involved in marketing informatics. c. To demonstrate, analyze, and improve the application of marketing informatics to selected problems, through pilot projects with sponsors, and d. To develop marketing informatics expertise in the Atlantic region and Canada through new educational and training courses and programs, available regionally and through distance education. The information management aspect of the Chair (of particular significance to the appointment in the School of Library and Information Studies) will be directly concerned with information usability and research will consider information products and services either for internal or external client use. Examples of types of research that could be undertaken include: a. information and service handling activity observation and needs assessment for various user classes b. development of improved information access and filtering mechanisms c. development of improved indexing and retrieval mechanisms, particularly from multiple diverse sources d. user interface design and evaluation, e.g., experimental and test site evaluation of competing user interface paradigms, product platforms, and information management services. e. development of improved presentation techniques, including visualization techniques and integration of multiple information sources. Holders of the Chair positions will work as an interdisciplinary research team and will also have a reduced teaching load in graduate programmes in the Faculty of Management. Dalhousie University's Faculty of Management, one of Canada's leading management faculties, is uniquely configured to meet educational requirements into the twenty-first century through the School of Library and Information Studies, the School of Business Administration, the School of Public Administration, and the School for Resource and Environmental Studies. Dalhousie University is located in Halifax, a provincial capital in Canada's Atlantic region, and a site for a growing information technology industry. For further information, potential candidates for the chair positions should contact: Dr. Bertrum H. MacDonald, Director, School of Library and Information Studies, Faculty of Management, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada B3H 3J5. Fr: Prof. Norbert Fuhr Re: SIGIR '96: Workshop on Networked IR CALL FOR PAPERS SIGIR'96 Workshop on Networked Information Retrieval The recent and rapid growth of the Internet and corporate intranets poses new problems for Information Retrieval. There is now a need for tools that help people navigate the network, select which collections to search, and fuse the results returned from searching multiple collections. These problems are being addressed by the international IR research community and a number of digital libraries project around the world, like e.g. the U.S. Digital Libraries projects, the ERCIM Digital Libraries projects and the German MEDOC project. The goal of this workshop is to bring together people from each of these areas to discuss their varying approaches to common problems. Researchers are invited to submit position papers or extended abstracts discussing novel approaches to the following problems: o resource selection: selecting from among a set of collections or databases; o data fusion: merging or fusing results from different collections or databases; o archival retrieval methods for heterogeneous objects; o metaknowledge; o consistency; o multilingual environments; o user interfaces; and o architectures for networked information retrieval.
