Fr: The Pierpont Morgan Re: The Pierpont Morgan Library: Systems Librarian The Pierpont Morgan Library is an independent research library and museum with important collections of rare books, manuscripts, drawings and prints, ancient Near Eastern cylinder seals, and art objects. The Library has eight curatorial departments and a reference collection of over 50,000 titles. At present, rare and reference books are cataloged into RLIN; other collections are documented in departmental files, printed catalogs, and a card catalog in the Reading Room. The Library seeks a Systems Librarian to plan and coordinate the implementation of an online catalog for access to the Library's collections. Duties include the drafting of technical and functional requirements, systems evaluations leading to selection, liaison with vendors, management of retrospective conversion and data conversion projects, installation of the system, and ongoing support. The Systems Librarian will plan and implement access to collections through RLIN and the Internet as well as develop the OPAC as a means for access to digitized images. Qualifications: Master's degree in Library or Information Science highly desirable; experience with integrated library systems and bibliographic utilities (preferably RLIN) in an academic or research library setting, thorough understanding of the MARC format and bibliographic control, and knowledge of computer-based resources and services, including the Internet, required. The ACM SIGIR conference occurs annually, alternating between locations in North America and elsewhere (e.g. Europe). It attracts a broad range of professionals including theoreticians, developers, publishers, researchers, educators, and designers of systems, interfaces, information bases, and related applications. CALL FOR PAPERS: SIGIR '96 seeks original papers (i.e. never before submitted or published) on significant contributions to the broad field of information storage and retrieval covering the handling of all types of information as well as the underlying theories, models, and implementations. We encourage discussions of experimental studies, tests of usability, explorations of information retrieval behavior, reports on largescale system performance, and demonstrations of advanced approaches. We prefer theoretical contributions to have sufficient proof of utility, and designs that have been proven by a prototype. Similarly, reports on smallscale experiments should include convincing arguments or simulations to show their likelihood of generalization. INSTRUCTIONS FOR CONTRIBUTORS: Submissions to SIGIR '96 can be made in the form of papers, tutorials, panels, posters, or demonstrations, and should be addressed to the relevant Chairs. With the exception of papers and posters, submissions may be made via e-mail (plain ASCII text). All submissions should include complete contact information including mail address, telephone, fax, and e-mail. PAPERS: Papers (4 copies) should be submitted in English to the relevant Program Co-chair. Papers should contain at most 5000 words and should be double-spaced. The first page must contain the title of the paper and an abstract of not more than 100 words, but no indication about the author(s) and affiliation(s). In addition, authors must provide a separate page with the title, the author name(s), and the author affiliation(s), plus complete contact information (mailing address, telephone, fax, and e-mail) for the author to whom correspondence should be sent. Please indicate if the paper is to be considered for the Best Student Paper Award. This Award requires that the first and primary author be a fulltime student at time of submission. TUTORIALS: SIGIR '96 will begin with a full day of tutorials, each of which is intended to cover a single topic in detail. Proposals are solicited for tutorials of either a half day (4 hours) or full day in length. Submissions should be made to the Tutorials and Panels Chair and should include an extended abstract (3 - 5 pages) and an indication of the tutorial length, objectives, and intended audience. PANELS: SIGIR '96 will include a small number of panel sessions. These are intended to examine issues of interest to the research and development community and to stimulate lively debate between panelists and audience. Proposals are solicited from prospective moderators. Submissions to the Tutorials and Panels Chair should include an extended abstract outlining the proposed topic and a list of panel members. DEMONSTRATIONS: Demonstrations provide an opportunity for first-hand, interactive experience with information retrieval systems. Proposals (up to 3 pages) should be submitted to the Demonstrations Chair. The proposal should indicate how the demonstration will illustrate new ideas and describe the technical specifications of the system. The hardware, software, and network requirements for the demonstration, including the electrical requirements of the equipment, should be indicated. POSTERS: SIGIR '96 will include poster presentations to offer researchers an opportunity to present late-breaking results, significant work in progress, or research that is best communicated in presentational format. Abstracts of posters will appear in the conference proceedings. Submissions to the Posters Chair should consist of an extended abstract (3 copies) of approximately 3 - 4 pages emphasizing the research problem and the methods being used. In addition, a separate cover page is required containing the title of the poster, the name and affiliation of the author(s) as well as complete contact information. WORKSHOPS: Proposals are being solicited from both individuals and groups for one-day workshops to be held on August 22, 1996. Workshops bring together researchers to share information and discuss a topic that relates to their particular field of expertise. Submissions of up to 3 pages should be made to the Workshops Chair. They should include the theme and goal of the workshop, the planned activities, the maximum number of participants and the selection process, plus a list of potential participants. Please include a CV for each organizer detailing relevant qualifications and experience. After the workshop, organizers are to provide an article summarizing the workshop for SIGIR Forum. Moxley Re: Fellowship in Medical Informatics at MU Health Informatics Training University of Missouri 605 Lewis Hall Columbia, Missouri 65211 314 882-6966 The University of Missouri offers a flexible program to train postdoctoral and predoctoral candidates for an academic career in health informatics. A three-month fellowship for medical and veterinary students desiring a short research experience is also offered. The training program and curriculum prepares individuals to develop, use, and evaluate applications of innovative information methods and computers in the health care environment. The program emphasizes the synthesis, retrieval, organization, and effective management and communication of knowledge. The core curriculum consists of courses from five different divisions. The MU program has ten core faculty and numerous clinical affiliations with faculty from diverse backgrounds and active research programs. Upon completion of the program, all fellows are expected to have basic competency in computer networks, decision support systems, database management systems, health information systems, information science, and research methods. Graduating trainees should be qualified for an academic career in medical informatics. All fellows choose to work with a senior researcher on medical informatics projects. Strong liaisons are present with the Schools/Programs of Medicine, Nursing, Health Services Management, Library and Informational Science, Veterinary Medicine, Health Related Professions, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Statistics, Education, and Molecular Biology. In collaboration with a faculty mentor, fellows develop independent projects which includes writing proposals, system development, evaluation, and publications. Additionally, postdoctoral fellows holding clinical doctorates (MD, DO, DVM, DDS, etc.) could obtain an advanced degree: 1) A Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering, or in Educational Technology; 2) A Master's degree in the above fields or in Computer Science, Health Services Management, or Library and Information Science. Predoctoral fellows are required to obtain a degree depending upon their interests and background: (1) Ph.D. in ECE, (2) Ph.D. in Educational Technology, (3) Ph.D. in Nursing, or (4) M.A. in Library and Informational Science. All programs allow for considerable work in outside areas. For example, a candidate in Educational Technology or Nursing would take courses in Computer Science, and in Computer Engineering, etc. The courses to be taken are worked out by the candidate jointly with the candidate's faculty advisory committee, according to the candidate's interests and goals. Predoctoral fellows must be accepted by an academic department at MU. Short term fellows (3-6 months) will work with a senior researcher on a research project of mutual interest. Short term fellows must be students currently enrolled in Medical or Veterinary Medical School.
