Fr: wake@wln.com Re: WLN: Systems Administration Manager Position Available WLN, a bibliographic database services provider and information retrieval service, is seeking a systems administration manager/team leader. For 18 years, WLN has provided a broad range of innovative high-quality products and services to libraries of all types and sizes throughout the U.S. and around the world. These services include a full-service online MARC bibliographic database (with acquisitions, cataloging, and interlibrary loan subsystems and a linked authority file), CD-ROM versions of the database (LaserCat and FastCat), as well as database preparation and authority control service (the WLN MARC Record Service), and collection assessment software. WLN also provides 56Kb - T1 Internet connections to libraries and is in the midst of converting its SNA leased line network to a TCP/IP network. This position will manage computing and network platforms which support both internal operations / development projects and external customers of WLN's computer services including: * completion of a TCP/IP wide area network supporting customer access to a sophisticated library database, Internet services, and tape- loaded reference database services * production and distribution of CD-ROM based products and services * management of vendor contracts for mainframe computing services * potential migration of mainframe computing and database services to a multi-platform client/server oriented environment Desirable candidates will have substantive experience and the technologies required to perform the following key WLN activities; project management, team leadership, customer support, and budgeting. The position reports to the Chief Executive Officer and serves as part of the executive management team responsible for business and technology planning. The Director of the library system provides vision and leadership for library and information services in cooperation with the deans of the colleges and schools, the Assistant Provost for Information Technology, other academic officers of the University, and the directors of the library divisions. High quality library services are in place, collections budgets are strong, and extensive library automation assists library users and staff. We seek someone to help generate and implement, in this supportive environment, an agenda for the future of the Vanderbilt Library. The total budget for 1995-96 exceeds $13 million, and the staff of 225 includes 83 librarians and 142 support personnel. The Library is a member of ARL, CNI, CRL, and SOLINET. Reporting directly to the Provost, the Director has administrative responsibility for library-wide planning and policy direction; for centralized library services such as budget, personnel, automation and technical services; for service development, coordination and evaluation; and for spearheading fund-raising initiatives. The Director plays a university-wide leadership role in the development and implementation of information technologies for digital library capabilities. The Director represents the Library within the University and throughout the larger library and higher education communities. Applicants should present the appropriate advanced degree(s) and a distinguished record of library or other relevant administrative experience. Additionally, candidates must offer evidence of managerial vision, of strong and creative leadership, of problem-solving aptitude, of broad and effective communication, of commitment to service, of familiarity with users' expectations and needs in a major research library, and of interpersonal skills. The ability to establish positive, cooperative working relationships at all levels of the Library and University is critical. We expect a commitment to the academic mission of a multifaceted university distinguished for excellence in teaching and research, and imaginative response to the library's evolving function in facilitating scholarly communication. Familiarity with current and future applications of information technology is also expected, along with an understanding of how the Library contributes to the University's information technology environment. Fr: Katherine Sharp Review Re: Katherine Sharp Review CFP (This information can also be found at http://edfu.lis.uiuc.edu/review) Katherine Sharp Review, the peer-reviewed e-journal devoted to student scholarship and research within the interdisciplinary scope of library and information science, is now accepting submissions for the Winter 1996 issue, due to be released in March 1996. PURPOSE: Katharine Sharp Review exists as a journal to present articles by student9cience and can consist of work that hs been both prepared for coursework and through independent study. The purpose of the review will be to 1) provide an opportunity for other students to examine work that is being performed by their peers; 2) provide an opportunity for students to take part in the publishg process through submission of their own works; and 3) showcase and recognize significant student effort in an academic journal. Recognizing the breadth that library and infomration science enc opasses, submissions may cover a wide variety of topics in the field, and be represented in many forms: research findings and their application, analysis of policies and practices within the inducstry, thematic textual review, to name but a few. CALL FOR PAPERS: Katharine Sharp Review is currently seeking submissions for the Winter 1996 issue. All submissions must be received by Monday, December 19, 1995. Although it is not required for submission, we would appreciate an abstract (of 150-200 words) or indication of intention to submit. Submitted articles should be accompanied by an abstract of no more than 200 words. PREPARATION OF MANUSCRIPTS: I. All manuscripts must be received in machine-readable form. This can be in one of two ways: As an ASCII text file submitted via email to: sharp- review@edfu.lis.uiuc.edu OR contained on a 3.5" computer disk, formatted for IBM or compatible. We can accept disks produced with a number of various word processing packages and any files tht have been converted to ASCII format.
