Fr: Debra Wallace Re: Fourth Annual CICNet Conference on "Datafication" Fourth Annual CICNet Conference on "Datafication" - Sustaining the Global Network - Building New Communities May 15th - 17th, 1996 Marshall University, Huntington, West Virginia "Information can tell us everything. It has all the answers. But they are answers to questions we have not asked, and which doubtless don't even arise." from Cool Memories, Jean Baudrillard (1987, translated 1990) The unprecedented explosion of information on emerging global computer networks the world is experiencing today makes French semiologist Jean Baudrillard's words particularly timely. As networking technologies continue to develop, there are many new questions that need to be asked. In the three years that CICNet has addressed issues relating to "datafication" in rural areas, emerging technologies and changing social landscapes continue to prompt new questions. It is to build on the successes of the first, second and third Annual Conferences on Rural Datafication that CICNet announces the fourth Annual Conference on "Datafication" at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, May 15-17, 1996. In response to the many changes in the networking community that have occurred since the first conference only three years ago, this conference will include specific emphasis on content which is related to but expands significantly on the original themes of rural and physical access to the net in remote locations. Conference organizers have received feedback that sessions on civic and community networking as well as discussions on content areas of interest to citizens involved in such communities are now important. This conference seeks to respond to these expanded needs. ASK NEW QUESTIONS! We invite those who have been involved in building the global network -- as well as those wishing to bring the network to their communities -- to gather in Huntington in a dynamic environment to ask new questions prompted by recent developments in "datafication." The conference challenges us all to come together to push the limits of the Internet as we know it today -- both technologically and in content by building on the myriad yet often common issues facing those involved in Rural Datafication, community and civic networks and others. A formal Call for Participation will be issued mid-July. The deadline for submitting proposals will be mid-December. KEYNOTE SPEAKERS -- PANEL DISCUSSIONS -- PRESENTED PAPERS -- WORKSHOPS -- EXHIBITS: In addition to attending the Fourth Annual Conference on "Datafication," participants are invited to learn more about information networking from a state network perspective by attending the WVNET (West Virginia Network for Educational Telecomputing) annual users' conference, directly preceding the "datafication" conference in Huntington, May 14 - 15, 1996. After the WVNET annual users' conference and the Fourth Annual CICNet Conference on Datafication, many social events are planned highlighting West Virginian culture. WHO? Proposals for presentations and workshops are solicited from a wide range of user groups, including educators, librarians, local, state and federal governments, community organizations, farmers, network operators, individuals, members of community groups and others who would like to discuss the range of issues relevant to the conference. Topics of discussion will include universal access, community information servers, information alliances, access to government information, and alternative methods for gaining physical access.
