The ACM Hypertext Conference occurs annually, alternating between locations in the United States and Europe. Hypertext systems provide computer support for locating, gathering, annotating, and organizing information. Hypertext systems are being designed for information collections of material in diverse heterogeneous media, hence the alternate name, hypermedia. Hypertext is by nature multi-disciplinary, involving research in many fields, including computer science, cognitive science, rhetoric, and education, as well as many application domains. This conference will interest a broad spectrum of professionals in these fields including theoreticians, behavioral researchers, systems researchers, and applications developers. The conference will provide a forum for papers, panels, courses, commercial symposium, videos, technical briefings, posters, and demonstrations. Topics include but are not limited to: Paradigms for information access Information design Theories, models, and frameworks Experimental or observational studies Workplace deployment issues Structuring hypertext documents for reading and retrieval Innovative hypertexts Underlying technologies (persistent object stores, link services, databases, information retrieval, access control) TECHNICAL PAPERS-- REQUESTS FOR INFORMATION by electronic mail to: furuta@cs.umd.edu or stotts@cs.unc.edu. Standard computer hardware and systems software configurations and screen projection equipment will be provided by the conference. Washington State law prohibits rental of applications software, so each presenter must bring what they need. Non-standard or specialized hardware will be supported when possible, but presenters may need to ship it to the conference site. Proposals for demonstrations must include a description of hardware and software requirements. Other participants will receive a request for information about audio/visual and computer requirements when proposals are accepted. ********** I.A.2. Fr: Ray Thomas To: International Conference on Information Technology and People INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND PEOPLE - ITAP'93 Moscow, Russia May 24-26, 1993 Sponsored by ICSTI - International Centre for Scientific and Technical Information (Moscow) IEE - The Institute of Electrical Engineers (UK) Open University (UK) HFS - Human Factors Society ACM SIG on Computers and Society CALL FOR PARTICIPATION The first ITaP (Information Technology and People) Conference was held in Milton Keynes in England in April 1991. The second ITaP Conference will be held in Moscow on May 24-26th 1993. You are cordially invited to participate in ITaP'93. OBJECTIVES AND TARGET AUDIENCES: Information Technology holds out the prospect of rapid improvements in many areas of human activity - and profound changes in our living and working conditions. The conference will address the human dimensions of Information Technology (IT) developments. The human dimension has often been overlooked, but is essential if we are to understand the current and future prospects for IT. The aim is not primarily to explore the capabilities of the technology, but to explore what can be learned for the future from the experiences of information systems design, implementation and use. The conference will address the social, economic and organizational implications of IT, covering a range of technologies and their use in many different activities and industries including manufacturing, government, and services. The key themes for papers and discussion will include - the relationship between technological and organizational change, the changing nature of work, IT and government, IT in education and training, ITaP in manufacturing, new dimensions of communication, IT in less-developed nations, using IT for business development, IT and the "global community", IT and the quality of life, the cultural impact of IT, and IT in the home and the community. The conference will be of interest to three main groups of people: - to social scientists concerned with information technology developments, - to managers and other professional workers whose responsibilities are affected by information technology developments, and - to computer, telecommunications, and information technology professionals concerned with the wider implications of their work. CONFERENCE STRUCTURE AND SCALE: The aims of ITaP 1993 will be pursued in six modes of communication: plenary presentations, parallel sessions, poster sessions, tutorials, meetings of special interest groups, a press conference at which delegates will have opportunity to deal directly with questions relevant to their field from Russian and other journalists. About 100 papers and about 60 posters will be selected for presentation during the three day conference TOPICS WHICH MAY BE COVERED: There is no clear boundary to the range of topics which might be covered within the objectives and key themes of ITaP'93, as identified above. Contributions to the conference may fall within topics of the following kinds. IT and changing society Strategic implications of IT The revolution in the media IT and quality of life IT in the home IT's impact on working life and skills IT in retail distribution and banking, Health and safety conditions - implications of IT IT and disabled people Electronic social and cultural information Computer networks and human-to-human interaction Barriers to communication Social protocol and social machines Interactive experience Creative/innovative lifestyles and IT Intellectual property Human and organizational factors in information technology uptake The economic and social implications of technical standards The economic and social implications of convergence. ITaP in manufacturing IT in business development IT and the 'Global Community' IT in developing nations CALL FOR PAPERS AND POSTERS: Submissions for papers and poster sessions are invited in the form of abstracts of about 500 words to be sent by email OR FAX to the conference secretaries before 15th December 1992 (enir@ccic.icsti.msk.su or FAX No (7095)943-00-89, and m.allott@open.ac.uk or FAX No (44)998 653744). Each submission should state whether for paper or poster session, it should identify a topic area to which it is addressed, and any supporting facilities required. Submissions should include name(s) of authors, postal and email addresses, and a list of keywords. After review by the Programme Committee acceptance/rejection of papers and posters will be notified by January 28th 1992. Paper and poster abstracts will be distributed at the conference in English and Russian. The Programme Committee dealing with English language submissions includes joint chairs - Robin Williams (PICT and Edinburgh University) and Scott Overmyer (Minot State University and the Human Factors Society) , and Stan Aungles (Wollongong), Rear Adml Bob Baylis (Scientific and Defence Management Associates), Roland Kaye (Open Business School), Ralph Cornes (consultant/writer), Edward James (Imperial College and British Computer Society), Paul Kidd (Institute of Electrical Engineers), Robin Mansell (PICT and Sussex University), Ian Miles (Manchester University), Ray Thomas (Social Sciences Faculty, Open University), Steve Woolgar (PICT and Brunel University), Eleanor Wynn (ITaP Journal). Authors of papers accepted are expected to send a text of not more than 5000 words by March 15th for publication in English in the Proceedings of the conference. Papers will be presented in 40 minute sessions with consecutive translation. Papers presented will be considered for further publication by the journal 'Information Technology and People' edited by Eleanor Wynn and published by Northwind Publications. Poster presenters will be provided with poster space for the duration of the conference and will be expected to be available for questions and discussion for a pre-arranged period of two hours. Support for computer display, online communications, and video presentation can be made available if needs are clearly specified. The International Centre for Scientific and Technical Information in Moscow which is hosting the conference will also provide a special social and cultural program which will aim to give participants the opportunity to: - establish contacts and have meeting with colleagues in Russia and other CIS countries - get first hand impressions of current governmental, economic and social developments in Russia. - gain a better knowledge of Russian history, architecture, museums and theatres. It is expected that the discussions at ITaP'93 will reflect developments in the relationships between East and West, the trend towards more independent states, and the new prospects opened within Russia and the other CIS states. It is hoped that ITaP'93 will give a comprehensive high-level analysis of the major achievements, and unintended outcomes, of recent information technology developments which will be of value to participants and observers from Eastern and Western countries. The Registration Fee of 250 US$ (125 US$ for students and unwaged) includes arranging hotel accomodation, arrival/departure transport services, visa support, cocktail reception, coffee breaks, ITAP'93 proceedings, and theatre visit. The hotel cost are: 60 US$ single room, 40 US$ double room, 25 US$ student room (common flat for 2-3 persons). All rooms including breakfast, bath, TV set, phone set, etc. Service package for accompanying persons - 60 US$.
